Essex Local News - Local News From And For Essex12/01/13 Speak Up And Speak Out - Holocaust Memorial DaySpeak up, Speak out is the theme of the 2012 Basildon Holocaust Memorial Service being held on Thursday 26 January 2012 at the Towngate Theatre. Organised by the Basildon Faith Forum and supported by Basildon Council, the service takes place at the theatre’s Mirren Studio from 1pm to 4.30pm. The afternoon event marks Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) (Friday 27 January) which remembers the millions of people imprisoned, enslaved and killed by Nazi Germany during World War Two. The service is also in remembrance of the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. There are limited places available to attend the service, and on the day residents will be able to view an exhibit and film based on accounts of the survivors of the Holocaust. Key Speaker Otto Deutsch will be describing his experiences as a Jewish Child in Vienna immediately preceding the outbreak of war. Jack de Metz will also be guest speaking about how genocide of European Jewry succeeded because of the ideology of hate. Basildon Council will hold a one minute silence on Friday 27 January at 11am and the Book of Remembrance will be available for residents to sign at the Basildon Centre on the same day. Basildon Mayor Cllr Mo Larkin will also be marking HMD by adding her signature to the Book of Remembrance. She said: “HMD is about remembering the victims and those whose lives have been changed. “The theme for this year asks us to think about the responsibility and duty we all have to speak up when we see or hear something which we believe is wrong.” To confirm attendance to the service or for more information email shamrika.sydes@basildon.gov.uk or call 01268294329 by Friday 20 January 2011. Places will be issued on a first come, first served basis.
